Then no one but those who loved you will remember. Yeah worse, if you commit suicide, all the people who were scumbags to you will pretend they were your best friend.for like a month. I felt like the show focused less on “I hope Hannah’s classmates realize their wrongdoings and feel guilty” and more on “How can they make sense of Hannah’s suicide, esp in context of everything else going on in their lives? How can they be better, and also let go?” Much of season 2’s theme deals with “telling your story” - it was Hannah’s way of telling hers. They mentioned she wasn’t trying to get back at her classmates. But they made it clear on the show that that wasn’t the purpose behind Hannah’s tapes. The only “glamorization” I can think of is how one could interpret Hannah’s tapes as a revenge story - like, “oh if I kill myself my classmates will realize how much they fucked up and they’ll love me”. Hannah’s suicide leads to a long string of events that causes everyone a lot of pain - (spoilers) her parents divorce, multiple characters blame themselves/deal with the grief that came with her loss, even Clay yells that she “did an evil thing.” Maybe I’m missing something here - but how does 13 Reasons glamorize suicide/attempts? One of the characters is left physically crippled after his suicide, and spends the entire season trying to recuperate/come to terms with the possibility he may never recover. But maybe I’m just trying to justify it, I didn’t love the show but I didn’t think it was as awful as some people think it is lol. And the whole bit with her parents, that just goes to show that she didn’t realize how much she would hurt them. I thought the show was more of a depiction of how wrong she was-there WERE people listening (like Clay and the poem guy at the end and Tony) but she was so caught up in her shit she didn’t pay attention. And at the very end, she says something about how if she gets a sign from just one person caring about her, she won’t do it-and then proceeds to ignore someone who is actively asking her to spent time with them. We see how she was so emotional she didn’t pay attention. It showed every thing that made her upset and lead to her suicide, but showed that she was actively wrong about several of those things. But to me the show focused more on how wrong she was. I get why people have complaints like this because if you watch the show with that perspective it definitely comes off like that. Milking a topic like this for a quick and easy buck is just extremely unethical and don‘t get me started on those unnecessary graphic scenes.ġ3 reasons why is an awful show with terrible characters and a shocking romanticized portrayal of teenage suicide. All of this for what? Just to cause even more anger and bitterness in those affected? Why did clay for example receive a fucking tape to begin with? The fact that Netflix (despite warnings from psychologists and health professionals) portrayed it as some kind of revenge act is just horrible. There is nothing positive about someone ending his or her own life it‘s just fucking sad. Like what‘s the premise here? „Oh If I kill myself everyone is going to like me and they are gonna be super super sorry about what they‘ve done“. The show isn‘t only a terrible watch for the average consumer it‘s especially harmful for its target audience which are obviously teenagers! The way that the creators chose to portray suicide as something meaningful and special is really mind boggling. Not only are all of the characters cliché and completely unlikeable, they don‘t act like teenagers or even real fucking people for that matter. The way in which it portrays suicide and depression as some kind of quirky character traits is fucking disgusting.
